Adetoun - Joyful Joyful

I've been a fan of Adetoun and her gorgeously expressive voice ever since she teamed up with the London Gospel Community Choir to record the perfect Christmas song, Love's Not Just For Christmas. Last year, she was reunited with that song's writer/producer, Steve Anderson, on two wondrous festive recordings. Her takes on Silent Night and Grown Up Christmas List bought something nuanced and new to two songs that have been an indelible part of seasonal playlists for years and years. This year, we are gifted with an extra track to add to that now-EP - her stirring take on Joyful Joyful. Once again produced by Steve Anderson, it is clear that there is a love and respect for the source material from both artists. The piano accompaniment shimmers in, like a breeze of snow on the most beautious hills, swathing Adetown's crystalline voice in twinkling majesty. There first two verses/choruses are powered not by belting it to the rafters but by the control of the note and the imbuing of each word with just the right amount of passion. When the crescendo comes, it is fuelled by a glorious choral drenched wall of sound with shimmering bells - never overpowering Adetoun's uplifting voice but elevating it like a crown being placed on the head of a new Queen (of soul). Not just joyful joyful but also triumphant triumphant.
