Matt Dusk may well be auditioning to be the next Santa Claus. Ever since his still-splendid Peace on Earth EP back in 2011, his musical endeavours have been a part of seasonal Spotify playlists each holiday season. His 2016 set, Old School Yule, has become one of my top five all time favourite festive albums - a luscious exploration into big band, jazzy Christmas arrangements that sparkle like the brightest star on the tree. I love that, over the past few years, he has focused on a Christmas Edition single that satiate long term fans and (hopefully) entice some new ones to explore his Yuletide back catalogue. After sharing Cool Yule in 2020 and Little Saint Nick in 2021, he has strutted into the holiday season this year with his glorious take on Sleigh Ride. Matt has always been a gifted raconteur but he also understands how to make effective use of vocal and instrument. It feels to the listener like you are actually on the Sleigh Ride with Matt. Thanks to the symbiotic relationship between voice and musician, he conjures up sounds of crunching snow and wind in your hair that also serve to evoke images of a pristine winter wonderland. If it leaves you a bit breathless, then Matt has done his job well because this is finger clicking exhilaration at it's finest. Let's see what 2023 brings!
