One of my favourite things about writing my 60 day countdown to Christmas articles about new music each year is that I not only get to revisit the songs from years past but check in on those artists to see if they have new songs out for the playlists of Christmas present and future. Marie Lind, whose charmingly hopeful holiday song Unwrap My Heart came out 3 years ago today, has a brand new number out for 2022 (and, I don't doubt, a life well beyond this season). I know An Angel, written with Unwrap My Heart collaborator Pia Skaarup, is an exquisite soaring ballad all about those people we've lost along the way and how they seem to be a little closer to your heart as Christmas draws near. For isn't it true that all the feelings we have seem a little heightened at the most wonderful time of the year?

Marie's voice is built for a song as passionate and touching as this one. She doesnt just sing it, but pours her heart into it. Every note, every riff, every run is accentuated by the emotion within her from losing her younger sister to cancer - and every note she seems to draw power from as a cathartic, healing experience. And isn't that what great pop music does - showers soothing glitter over the cracks in our lives and helps them get better with each subsequent listen? Close your eyes, replay all the happy memories of your time with your loved one(s) and let the sweeping strings and gorgeous percussion swathe those cherished moments in radiant song; in that way, it is the closing credits to the greatest story every told and one unique to each listener. That Marie gets to be the narrator of this is both gift to her and treasure to the rest of us. Magical.
